Meet Cedric L., the founder of ANZlab, a remarkable organization on a mission to promote digital inclusion in Cameroon. In the summer of 2022, ANZlab joined forces with The Glass Room to host the Misinformation Edition Exhibition. In Yaoundé, the vibrant capital of Cameroon, ANZlab presented the thought-provoking experience at the International Forum on Disinformation.
But ANZlab didn't stop there. ANZlab visited local schools to share the "What the Future Wants" exhibition materials. Over 700 people, with a particular focus on young minds, participated in critical conversations about their relationship with technologies.

<Text>The International Center for Accelerated Development (ICAD) keyed into the vision of Tactical Technology to provide information to young people on the adversities associated with the use of digital technology. This was done through the Peer Education digital learning series and since then, it has been at the core of ICAD’s program.</Text>

<Text>Digital Dada Podcast focuses on discussions around online violence and digital security. Digital technologies have become incredibly vital to journalism work, but this has also resulted in an increase in the amount of tools and platforms that may be used against journalists as a means of surveillance, identification, and harassment by both state and non-state actors. Today, online violence is generally unnoticed by the mainstream media. One explanation for this is because society has yet to acknowledge that internet violence is "real" violence. The fact that it takes place on an internet platform does not make it any less real. Most victims of online abuse are reluctant to disclose the matter, which is aggravated by the victim shaming. The majority of journalists begin self-censoring; this is a huge problem not only for the victims, but for the entire society: when journalists self-censor, the basic right to freedom of information is jeopardized.</Text>

<Text>The Youth Foundation advises, supports and documents around 140 projects every year. The focal point of these projects is to encourage young people to show initiative, volunteer, take responsibility for themselves and others and realise new ideas.The Youth Foundation addresses current social issues, highlights areas of innovation and sets new courses for development together with partners in youth education and with young people themselves. The foundation helps to establish regional and national structures in the field of youth education. Their third focus lies in issuing publications and work materials, as well as in events and further education courses on project management, networking, transitioning from school to a career, media activities and promoting democracy. </Text>

<Text>The Goethe-Institut is a cultural institution of the Federal Republic of Germany that operates in 158 cities around the world.The Goethe-Institut in North Macedonia was first registered as a liaison office in 2007. In November 2016 the liaison office grew into the Goethe-Institut. Since January 2016 The Goethe-Institut Skopje offers courses and exams in the German language and is also responsible for the coordination of the countries of Albania and Kosovo. The activities of the institute include educational cooperation and cultural program in the fields of: science, literature, film, media, music, theater/dance, fine arts.</Text>

<Text>The Uroboros project was initiated in late 2019 by a group of friends based in Prague, Czech Republic, and officially released in May 2020 with the inaugural Uroboros festival. The first festival edition was organised as a hybrid online/offline event and brought together over 600 designers, artists, researchers, and creative practitioners from around the world. Inspired by this interest, they decided to extend Uroboros from a one-off festival into a long-term project, re-imagining Uroboros as an annual festival series accompanied by various collateral events.</Text>

The year 2013 was a turning point for the work and development of the Library, as it was moved to new, modernly equipped premises in the city centre, and became accessible and visible to all categories of users and members. <Text>The Třinec Town Library is a public library. The goal of the library is to become a third place (after home, school/work) for their users to spend their free time that inspires them, gives them access to information, education and entertainment. In 2014, the  the Třinec Infocentrum , one of the exhibition spaces of the Třinec City Gallery and a literary café were created alongside the library. The Třinec Town Library have become an important cultural and community center of the city of Třinec. In this way, they continue the trend where public libraries in the Czech Republic participate to a large extent in the life of the city, its citizens and groups. The Minister of Culture of the Czech Republic awarded the Třinec Town Library the title Library of the Year 2015.</Text>

<Text>Webwise is the Irish Internet Safety Awareness Centre. Webwise promotes the autonomous, effective, and safer use of the internet by young people through a sustained information and awareness strategy targeting parents, teachers, and children themselves with consistent and relevant messages.They develop and disseminate resources that help teachers integrate internet safety into teaching and learning in their schools. They also provide information, advice, and tools to parents to support their engagement in their children’s online lives. With the help of the Webwise Youth Advisory Panel Webwise develops youth oriented awareness raising resources and campaigns that address topics such as cyber bullying.</Text>

<Text>Associació Verificat is the first fact-checking platform in Catalonia. Associació Verificat is an impartial, independent organization committed to transparency, both in terms of the funding sources and in the methodology. They believe that fact-checking must be an activity detached from political and economic interests, which is why no member of their team has ties to parties or conflicts of interest of any kind. Associació Verificat specializes in monitoring Catalonia's politics, hate speech and scientific misinformation that has multiplied since the pandemic, especially on health and climate change. The organisation is also does data journalism, research and work on transparency.</Text>

<Text>Central Library of Srečko Vilhar Koper is the central general library of the Municipality of Koper and the central regional library of the Coastal-Karst region. It was founded in 1951 and is still the largest public library in Slovenian Istria. The entire collection of the library comprises 300,000 items of library material. As the central regional library, the Koper library also carries out special tasks for the public libraries of the Coastal-Karst region and expertly connects these libraries in a regional network that ensures the coordinated implementation of library activities.</Text>

In 2014 Save the Children launched “Enlighten the Future”, a campaign to combat educational poverty in Italy through the opening of 26 *Punti Luce - "high-density educational centers" -   in the most deprived areas of the country. <Text>European Schoolnet is a network of 34 European Ministries of Education, based in Brussels. As a not-for-profit organisation, it aims to bring innovation in teaching and learning to its key stakeholders: Ministries of Education, schools, teachers, researchers, and industry partners. Since its founding in 1997, European Schoolnet (EUN) has used its links with education ministries to help schools become effective in the pedagogical use of technology, equipping both teachers and pupils with the necessary skills to achieve in the digital society. In particular, it pledges to: support schools in achieving effective use of ICT in teaching and learning, improve and raise the quality of education in Europe, and promote the European dimension in education.</Text>

<Text>The Bachchao Project is a techno-feminist collective that undertakes community-centric efforts to develop and support open source technologies and technical frameworks with the goals of mitigating gender-based violence and working towards equal rights for women, LGBT persons, and gender diverse persons. We conduct research and advocacy in all the above areas and guide communities in determining appropriate technological interventions for themselves.</Text>

<Text>In the summer of 2022, ANZlab joined The Glass Room's <a href="https://www.theglassroom.org/fablab-partnership/">FabLab Partnership</a> together with 18 other FabLabs across 12 countries hosting the Misinformation Edition. Having successfully presented the exhibition at the Yaoundé International Forum on Disinformation, ANZlab further outreached the Misinformation Edition and What the Future Wants materials in local schools in Cameroon, reaching hundreds of people. Crucially, ANZlab helped pilot the <a href="https://www.theglassroom.org/en/misinformation-edition/exhibits/host-misinfo-formats/">new exhibitions formats</a> and translate materials into French.</Text>

<Text>ANZlab provided valuable insight into the exhibition materials in an African context, and made suggestions on how the content could be localised so that his community could more closely relate to the examples and information. Their experience testing the resources made them aware that critical digital and media literacy education in Cameroon is uncommon and necessary.</Text>

<Text>Casa Hacker is a Brazilian non-profit which gives local communities opportunities to discuss their online experiences and explore digital technologies, shaping and enabling alternative futures for people living on the peripheries. Casa Hacker partnered with Tactical Tech to translate, design and run exhibitions, and lead workshops and trainings-of-trainers.</Text>
<Text>Casa Hacker was founded in 2018 in Campinas. Their mission is to make digital technologies and the Internet a place for everyone. They are a community-based organisation, born in a low-income community, and led by young technologists. They develop and implement projects that make sense to the communities they operate in, by building capacity, developing digital skills, supporting local collectives and promoting active citizenship. Many times, the main issues these communities face are related or connected to technology.</Text>
<Text>Casa Hacker and Tactical Tech have been partnering for years, across different projects. They have been translating Data Detox Kit materials, facilitating Data Detox Workshops and exhibiting The Glass Room: Community Edition since 2018. In 2022, they translated What the Future Wants to Brazilian Portuguese, and designed a comprehensive training programme to distribute the resources to communities living in São Paulo (Centro Cultural da Juventude Ruth Cardoso), Campinas (Terracota Coworking) and Rio de Janeiro (Data Labe). They combined materials from The Glass Room and What the Future Wants, and ran exhibitions, workshops and a digital outreach campaign. They deliver interactive workshops: including dialogues, debates, videos, music, memes and a self-defence class using Capoeira, an Afro-Brazilian martial art. This creates a safe, welcoming and engaging environment where educators can more effectively teach, and students are captivated and feel inspired to learn.</Text>

<Text>data_labe's work intersects human rights, race, gender, urbanism, data and technology. Their team has been investigating and developing new narratives and methodologies to talk to people about responsible use of the internet and privacy as a mindset. They believe in the democratisation of knowledge, and focus their work on People of Colour, women, LGBTQIA+ and marginalised groups.</Text>

<Text>For their partnership, they adapted the Data Detox Kit into a poster exhibition, which they showed at their annual festival, Criptofunk, an intervention organised by datalabe in partnership with Olabi, Observatório de Favelas and Intervozes. In 2022, the two-day festival convened groups of activists, favelas dwellers and those interested in the topic of digital care. The event's theme was deceleration, and the posters included the character _Sankofa, a bird from African and Afro-Brazilian philosophy which represents a return to the past, in order to reframe the present and build a better future.</Text>

<Text>The posters and experience created by data_labe further illustrates how civil society can use art and creativity to talk about digital rights. Inspiration was taken from <a href="https://theglassroom.org/the-glass-room-community-edition/">The Glass Room: Community Edition</a> formats, which use exhibitions as an engaging way to start conversations. Our partnership with them, also underscores the importance of content localisation (beyond translation). The use of important symbols and motif's in Brazilian and Afro-Brazilian culture, such as the Sankofa and popcorn curtains (a symbol of cleansing), contemporary language, visual identity and relevant timely local examples are key to producing meaningful resources.</Text>

data_labe are a media and research organisation based in the Maré
favela in Rio de Janeiro. In partnership with Tactical Tech, they adapted and
localised existing resources which were shown at their annual event
Criptofunk, a festival connecting technology and funk.

<Text>ForSet is a Tbilisi-based creative enterprise on a mission to strengthen change-makers using data, design, and technology. They partnered with Tactical Tech to translate, exhibit, and test materials from The Glass Room: Misinformation Edition and What the Future Wants exhibitions.</Text>
<Text>ForSet produces work in the areas of data storytelling, community building, education and civic tech. They strive to make complex information more accessible to diverse audiences through their projects. They organise DataFest Tbilisi, an important networking event in the region, where sustainable communities can meet and be built.</Text>
<Text>In partnership with Tactical Tech, ForSet translated both The Glass Room: Misinformation Edition and What the Future Wants to Georgian. They showed the Misinformation Edition in English at DataFest Tbilisi 2022, and organised an event with their translated resources at the National Parliamentary Library of Georgia, inviting students, journalists and important digital and media literacy stakeholders in the country. Their goal was to illustrate to stakeholders that arts, visualisation and self-reflection are effective ways to educate people.</Text>
<Text>For their younger audiences, ForSet partnered with Tactical Tech with the objective of making the resources available to youth and educators across Georgia. The first step of this project was translating the What the Future Wants exhibition and the Data Detox x Youth into Georgian. In partnership with UNICEF Georgia they hosted the What the Future Wants exhibition at UNICEF’s event at the Contemporary Education Academy in October 2022, visited by students and teacher. Moreover, they have adapted the What the Future Wants co-creation workshop outlines and conducted four sessions with young people to test the materials. These adaptations enabled them to address the impact of digital technologies on Georgian society, and build young people's competencies so they can be in the driving seat of their digital futures.</Text>

<Text>Goethe-Institut Skopje partnered with What the Future Wants through their educational programs and work with civil society organisations to foster critical digital literacy in young people throughout the network of Goethe-Instituts in Southeast Europe.</Text>
<Text>In the first phase of the project, Goethe-Institut Skopje hosted co-development workshops with young people feeding into the creation process of the exhibition. In a second stage, and in collaboration with Goethe-Instituts across Europe, they coordinated the translation of the What the Future Wants exhibition into several languages including <a href="https://theglassroom.org/de/what-the-future-wants">German</a>, Macedonian and Albanian. Finally, the Institute has worked with selected schools and civil society organisations to disseminate the materials and host exhibitions across Southeast Europe. They have created safe spaces for learning and critical thinking about the impact of digital technologies on the lives of young people and their communities.</Text>
<Text>In this regard, we would like to highlight the What the Future Wants exhibition hosted in October 2022, in Skopje, North Macedonia, in the the framework of the project “Der gläserne Mensch“ (The Transparent Man), a collaboration between various regional Goethe-Instituts. The exhibition was visited by young people, educators, civil society organisations and decision makers and was part of a larger outreach campaign on social media and media outlets in the country.</Text>
<Text>This multi-layered and long-term partnership has allowed for ownership of the project by the partner but also for a symbioses of the goals of What the Future Wants and the work the Goethe-Institut has been developing on the topics of digital and media literacy in Southeast Europe.</Text>

conduct co-development workshops, localise and translate the What the Future

<Text>Technology-related human rights violations and state surveillance are not considered significant problems in Turkey. Therefore, Gözlemevi came to life, positioned as a research, intelligence, and resource hub for advocates, educators, civil society organizations, and other institutions that conduct any work on technology's impact on society. Besides its function as a hub, Gözlemevi conducts education and literacy programs for young people, social entrepreneurs, and activists. Gözlemevi works independently and cooperates with institutions such as NewsLabTurkey or FNF Turkey.</Text>
<Text>Gözlemevi is founded by ex-Googlers, ex-big-tech employees, human rights advocates, and civil society actors. They make skills, tools, workings, and learnings of big tech accessible to activists. Gözlemevi imagines a people-oriented internet ecosystem where technology corporations are held responsible for their actions. It empowers institutions working on other issues to integrate technology into their systems. For example, Gözlemevi's works and analysis have allowed many civil society organizations in Turkey to explore how microtargeting ads based on demographics can be used for segregation. Gözlemevi focuses on exploring power relationships and has a critical perspective on its take regarding technology companies' practices, policies, and workings. It "plugs in" other existing civil and advocacy networks to deliver its message; for example, they connect local journalists around Turkey through dokuz8haber or reach to other civil society organizations through the European Union Think Civil program.</Text>
<Text>Gözlemevi launches documentaries to inform people about the impact of technology on society. For instance, The Omniptikon documentary takes the users on a journey from the 90s onwards as it explores how technology evolved in a way that negatively affects society, informing the audience about surveillance, usage of our data, and the attention economy. In addition, Gözlemevi conducts algorithmic and digital literacy training Investigations: Gözlemevi conducts investigations on technology companies' practices and policies and how they impact society. Gözlemevi also empowers institutions with algorithmic literacy programs.</Text>

<Text>Jaaklac is a non-formal organization run in collaboration with young people, educators and civil society organizations mostly in Latin America.</Text>
<Text>Jaaklac aims to broaden the participation in the governance of the digital ecosystem, promotes Latin American projects in critical digital education and innovates solutions guided by human rights. Their focus is younger generations and generally excluded groups and their goal is creating a fairer digital future for all.</Text>
<Text>Jaaklac aims at bridging ‘divisions of learning’ that Shoshana Zuboff signaled as defining our information society and magnifying social inequalities. Global strategies to bridge digital divides have been overly focused on providing access, with insufficient educational policies to reflect on the implications of the digital ecosystem in societies and the environment. Digital education has been mostly dedicated to teaching with technologies, relegating the understanding of these to the neutral representations of science and technology disciplines. Moreover, international digital agendas have consistently overlooked children’s rights and freedoms. Under eighteen years old are one in three people online globally. This is the first generation which lives and lifelong opportunities are completely ‘datafied’. Nonetheless, within digital governance discussions there is minimal engagement with children’s values, needs and voices.Latin America is the most unequal region in the world and the pandemic brought to the fore how digital divides are the cause and consequence of these. In recent years, the region has made great advances in terms of children’s rights. However, a remaining commonality across countries are the disadvantages that monumentally affect its younger generations. This context permeates as well into digital risks being amplified, for example, with weaker welfare systems and data protection regulations. Promoting spaces for digital education are crucial to mitigate the constraints the digital age can impose to children’s wellbeing and to collectively harness social justice.</Text>
<Text>The partnership resulted in raising awareness on digital risks for children and developing solutions to address a current gap in digital education in relation to these topics. For the GR RA LAC, we established collaborations between  digital rights organisations, schools and technologists to reflect upon the  topics encompassed in the GR Misinformation edition and to rethink it to be centred in Latin American youth. The project aimed at developing a GR edition based on Augmented Reality (AR) to design an engaging experience especially for audiences with no previous experience on issues of misinformation and privacy in relation to digital technologies.</Text>
<Text>GR RA LAC convened civil organisations and schools from Latin America focussed on children and young people (between 12 to 24 years old). This resulted in one high school and one civil society organisation partnering with young people. Three digital rights civil society organisations took part to share their past experiences implementing the GR in Latin America. The team was also constituted by a company specialised on Augmented Reality. The project was further co coordinated with Causas Digitales, a youth group from Latin America which is part of JAAKLAC’s projects. Current members are from Mexico, Colombia and Venezuela aged between 19 and 27 years old. To adapt the GR exhibit we developed an Atlas of Activities, which mainly consisted in three online workshops. Prior to this, a coordination meeting was conducted with Causas Digitales and organisations to adjust the Atlas, better coordinate the sessions and introduce participants to each other. Each online workshop was dedicated for participants to learn, share and do in order to progress in the development of a GR RA LAC plan. The sessions were dedicated to (1) lessons learnt from past GR exhibits in Latin America (co facilitated by TEDIC and Fundación Karisma); (2) exploring the possibilities of AR to enhance exhibits (co facilitated by Aumenta); and (3) elaborating a plan to design and implement the GR RA LAC in 2023. This process was complemented with participants invited to follow tasks asynchronously that nurtured ideas and built a roadmap to collectively materialise the exhibit. Activities further included the translation of GR Misinformation materials into Spanish language.</Text>

These take the shape of a horizontal dialogue entwining  different worldviews and backgrounds to make sense of the effects of digital technologies. b) To this end, GR RA LAC was based on collaboration and participation. Workshops and other activities were co-facilitated with different stakeholders and young people. c) Firstly, the process aimed at encouraging organisations to repurpose resources developed in Europe and to tailor these to the Latin American context. Secondly, to connect young people and organisations not specialised in digital rights to the GR.</Text>

The performance in school or college, look for jobs to improve their standard of living. Young people always feel that their tech needs can be rewarding when they visit the library because of free Wi-Fi. Our organization has been training the youths and school-going children on the advantages of the internet without informing them disadvantages. This makes it hard for them to know where the line falls between safe, authentic information, rewarding use and overuse of technology.</Text>
<Text>I am a trailblazer who teaches digital skills to young people, advocates for capacity building, and focuses on how to implement ICT innovative services in libraries. The services are unique within the informal settlement because the community cannot afford to pay for computer classes, others are school dropouts and the schools which surround the library lack adequate digital facilities and they always rely upon the library to access information. I train basic digital skills.The training I conduct in the library assists the youth to be able to search for information on their own, look for jobs, connect with other minded people, etc. Some young people are able to do online jobs and earn a living hence improving their standard of living. Some of these young people are school dropouts because of a lack of school fees and they even start learning online using the library computers. My main responsibility is to train community members about technology, and its effects on their daily lives.</Text>

At  Kiberal Community the highest number of trainees in digital
skills are the young people including Visually impaired persons so in this
case once we partner with Tactical Tech we will manage to train more young
people.

The Fabulous Woman Network, based in Ghana, supports the growth of
women-led businesses providing them with entrepreneurial skills through
activities and training programs. They have been connected as a partner to the
Data Detox Kit since 2019, running multiple programs including developing
videos.

<Text>Ubunteam first got in touch with the Data Detox Kit in 2019, responding to our Open Call for Partners, with the plan of translating some of our materials into French. This initial partnership with them came at a critical time, just after the Data Detox Kit had completely revised and expanded the core content. After the core materials became available in French, they printed 1000 copies of the Data Detox Kit in French, adapting the format into a stapled booklet. They knew then that they wanted to run workshops where they could distribute the Data Detox Kits, but it was not until the next year when they were able to turn their concept into a reality.</Text>
<Text>In 2021, Ubunteam applied to become a partner with the Digital You initiative, in which they developed a series of training programs focused on Data Detox Kit topics that they called “Digital Detox Days”. In 2022, Ubunteam ran five unique Digital Detox Days reaching a total of 330 participants.</Text>

<Text>Ubunteam organized their sessions on various topics of the Data Detox Kit as well as by participant age (13-18 versus 19-35) and gender (two of the 13-18 years old sessions were for girls).</Text>

Ubunteam is an organization in the Ivory Coast made up primarily of
volunteers working to promote open source software, digital inclusion, and
defending digital rights. Ubunteam train journalists, activists, and students
on open source software, digital privacy, and digital security.

<Text><h2>Why?</h2></Text>
<Text>Technology increasingly defines the way we get informed, develop opinions, make decisions, explore solutions and imagine different futures in the context of crises like climate change, pandemics or political polarisation. From the promises of artificial intelligence to the spread of conspiracy theories on social media platforms, digital technologies are seen as both a solution for our crisis and also as the root cause. In what ways are technologies the lens through which we witness, investigate and understand our own reactions to crisis, and the reactions of others?</Text>
<Text><h2>What?</h2></Text>
<Text>The Everything Will Be Fine public intervention explores how people understand and respond to global crises like climate change and pandemics through the lens of technology. The experience presents the work of over 60 artists, researchers and technologists around the world, including Paolo Cirio, Marjolijn Dijkman, Disnovation.org, Olalekan B. Jeyifous, Vladan Joler, Egor Kraft, Agnieszka Kurant, Sybille Neumeyer,  Liam Young, and more.</Text>
<Text> The Everything Will Be Fine public intervention, structured in four themes Digital Panic, Care, Doubt and Hope, invites visitors to embark on a journey of self-reflection and critical questions.</Text>
<Text>The ‘outer circle’ of the structure displays large-scale images representing artworks that explore different technological responses to current and future crises. Within the 'inner circle', visitors enter a space for exploration and learning where they can explore different perspectives ranging from investigation to playful provocations. Here, they can dig deeper into themes including surveillance in the city, how our everyday digital tools are used to influence us in a crisis, alternative technological solutions and fantasy futures.</Text>
<Text>The first edition of the <a href="https://everythingfine.org/">Everything Will Be Fine</a> intervention was co-produced by HAU Hebbel am Ufer andhosted in a unique outdoor inflatable structure designed by Czech architects Kogaa at the Deutsches Technikmuseum between 14 September – 4 October 2022.</Text>

decisions and respond to current global crises like climate change, pandemics
or political polarisation.

Everything Will Be Fine

Every day, women face the consequences of online harassment and hate speech as a result of their gender identity and their environment. In this context, Tactical Tech’s Gender and Tech project has spent the last four years working toward giving women, specifically in Latin America, the technical skills and practical know-how to teach one another and create their own networks.
A significant part of this project was the Gender and Technology Institutes, a series of events orientated towards women human rights defenders to address the risks, attacks and contexts faced by activist women in these regions and help them build capacity in their local communities. They took place between 2014 and 2018 in Germany, Nicaragua, Ecuador, Spain, Panama, Skri Lanka, Malaysia, Mexico and Uruguay.
Each GTI further developed specific facilitation methodologies and training contents in partnership with local and international organisations. As a result of the Gender and Technology Institutes, there have been hundreds of follow-on activities as the participants take what they learnt to their own communities. A training curricula was developed in English and Spanish that contained more than 20 workshop templates on topics such as Hacking Hate Speech, Strategies of Resistance, Creative Uses of Social Media and Technological Sovereignty. And the Gendersec Wiki is a regularly updated resource bank for activities, resources, discussions and events.
