🚀 Launching "Supercharged by AI", a new exhibition on AI effects on our online lives
We're thrilled to announce this creative intervention that explores how AI is "supercharging" existing harms like scams, harassment, polarisation and bias. A collaboration between Tactical Tech, DensityDesign Research Lab and the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), funded by the European Media & Information Fund (EMIF). On September 24, Tactical Tech's Executive Director Marek Tuszynski moderated the panel "The Privacy Paradox," organised by FORUM. The discussion, featuring Alex Carroll, Bella Davis-Riemer, and Ma Yongfeng, focused on the erosion of privacy in a tech-driven world and the trade-offs between personal data, freedoms, and convenience. Tactical Tech's Louise Hisayasu and Dominika Knoblochová hosted a hands-on Data Detox Workshop addressing how AI models can reproduce stereotypes and implicit bias and how to challenge these systems. Find out more about how AI supercharges bias here
💡 ➡️ We were at the Civil Rights Defenders' Days Conference in Stockholm
Tactical Tech's Cassie Cladis delivered three workshops at this event that welcomed more than 150 human rights defenders from over 50 countries around the world and offered a space for learning and sharing. Our workshops focused on "Online Political Influence: AI, Data and Tech Firms" presenting the existing and new research and facilitating conversations around the use of digital technologies in elections. Tactical Tech's Safa Ghnaim participated in the EPALE - Adult Learning in Europe conference, discussing how educators and citizens can reclaim their agency in the digital transition. Tactical Tech hosted this digital literacy exhibition at the RNW Media event, which gathered over 100 changemakers, journalists, activists, and media creators to discuss AI's impact on the digital media landscape. The Starling Centre: addressing the social impacts of digital technologies and AI on our everyday lives.
On October 2-3, 2024, Canada’s Western University celebrated the launch of The Starling Centre for Just Technologies and Just Societies. The Centre is committed to advancing just, equitable, and humane futures by examining the social impacts of digital technologies and artificial intelligence on daily life. Through interdisciplinary research and community-based programs, the Centre aims to make technology more transparent and empower individuals to reclaim their digital rights.
The launch featured Tactical Tech's The Glass Room exhibition on data privacy and events on AI's impact on marginalized communities, security, warfare, and discrimination —highlighting the Centre’s commitment to civic engagement and knowledge-sharing across Canada and beyond.
