Previous Work

Since it began in 2003 Tactical Tech has developed a series of solutions for capacity building and a methodology for enabling technology use by advocates.

Source Events
Tactical Tech has created a methodology for training technology to non-profits and developing the skill-base of the sector through its Source Events, and created a template for replicating and hosting these events.

Completed six 'Source' events bringing together over 400 regional advocates and non-profit technologists for eight day long hands-on skill sharing workshops:

NGO-in-a-box Produced and published four thematic NGO-in-a-box toolkits and several event related boxes (look at the toolkit section for more information). Over 5000 of these toolkits have been distributed in hard copy to date with an estimated extra 500 downloads per month. The toolkits are;

  • a Digital Security toolkit for human rights defenders and journalists
  • an Audio/Video toolkit
  • an Open Publishing toolkit
  • a 'Base-box' for setting up an NGO office

Projects Completed over 20 NGO technology projects ranging from eRider initiatives and individual workshops to mentoring and consultancies. Including;

  • Provided consultancy and mentoring to six issue networks.
  • Conducted several in-depth needs assessments of ICT needs by civil society in; Thailand, the Phillippines, the Middle East, West Africa and Central Asia. Completed three sectoral needs assessments for human rights groups in the former Soviet Union, the Burmese movement, and sex worker advocacy organizations around the world.
  • Trained over 800 Human Rights defenders and independent journalists in digital security

Guru gatherings In the past 4 years we lead four 'guru gatherings': meetings of select leading practitioners to drive forward development of solutions and collaboration amongst key actors, in specific areas:

Additionally we organised two regional meetings:

Resources There are also a number of resources that were outcomes of our various activities and those include:

  • EU funding guide - for the FP6 programme
  • SSRC Report - an analyse of our source events , based on Summer Source and Africa Source 1
  • Skype Security - a paper examining some of the security issues related to Skype
  • Straight from the Source - a paper written by the Bridges.org and based on interviews with the participants of the Africa Source 1 workshop
  • Asia Source Booklet - large collection of interviews with the participants of Asia Source 1 conducted and written by Frederick Noronha

Approach Over the past four years Tactical Tech has also developed...

  • A distinct methodology and style for engaging with the uptake of technology for non profits, more information on this can be found in the “our approach” section of this website and in the 'Info-activism' section.
  • An in-depth working knowledge of designing and implementing technology projects for NGOs in a diverse range of regions.
  • Hundreds of contacts working on non-profits and technology internationally, regionally and locally across Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Australasia, Europe and the Americas.
  • Links with networks worldwide of practitioners and advocates working on the development and uptake of Free and Open Source Software.
  • A proven range of partnerships and collaborations with international and local actors working with non-profits and technology.
