The Glass Room is an immersive ‘tech store with a twist’ that disrupts our relationship with technology and encourages visitors to make informed choices about their online life.

At first glance, it offers the latest in digital consumer products, such as the newest tablet, fitness tracker or facial recognition software. But as visitors go inside, The Glass Room prompts reflection, experimentation, and play, and they find there is nothing for sale.


Curated by Tactical Tech and produced by Mozilla, The Glass Room exhibition and event programme was hosted at 69-71 Charing Cross Road, in the heart of central London, from 25 October - 12 November 2017 and attracted close to 19,000 visitors. At the heart of The Glass Room London were four thematic themes consisting of over 40 objects, installations and animations - including new commissions to reflect the UK context.

The three week event programme Our Data, Our Selves included talks, hands-on workshops and themed events - from dating to politics to cryptoparties.

At the Data Detox Bar, our trained Ingeniuses were on hand to reveal the intimate details of our current ‘data bloat’ and the digital traces we leave behind; who capitalises on it; and the simple steps to a lighter data count.

About the Curators: Executive Director Stephanie Hankey and Creative Director Marek Tuszynski co-founded Tactical Tech in 2003. They work at the nexus of technology, politics, information, design and activism and the consequences of living in a quantified society. They are also co-founders of the creative agency Tactical Studios and co-curators of the exhibition Nervous Systems: Quantified Life and the Social Question. Stephanie Hankey is a designer and technologist; she was awarded an Ashoka Fellowship for her work as a social entrepreneur and is currently an affiliate at Harvard’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society. Marek Tuszynski is an activist and filmmaker; his most recent documentary series for Tactical Tech, Exposing the Invisible, explores the digital tools and tactics that now enable evidence-based activism to thrive on an unprecedented scale.

About Tactical Tech: Tactical Tech is a Berlin-based organisation made up of activists, technologists and designers who work at the intersection of technology, human rights and civil liberties. In an increasingly quantified society. Tactical Tech reaches more than three million people by providing trainings, conducting research, and creating cultural interventions that contribute to the wider socio-political debate around digital security, privacy and the value and ethics of data.

The Glass Room, originally The White Room, was conceived and produced in the context of the Nervous Systems - Quantified Life and the Social Question, an exhibition by the Haus der Kulturen der Welt in collaboration with the Tactical Technology Collective, co-curated by Stephanie Hankey, Marek Tuszynski and Anselm Franke. Nervous Systems took place as part of HKW's "100 years of Now" project.
