We took our website offline yesterday in protest of the Stop Online Privacy Act (SOPA)and Protect-IP Act (PIPA). These two bills, which are designed to block access to unauthorised copyrighted material online, present a huge threat to the open internet as we know it. They give the US government and rights holders the power to seek a court order against any website "enabling or facilitating" piracy, providing the power to shut down websites as well as social networking platforms and even de-list them from search engine results.
